India: Between People and their Prayers

Focusing on the origins of some of the oldest religions in the world, I discovered extravagant and beautiful shrines amidst the horrors of extreme poverty and excessive mounds of garbage. How does one reconcile the handicapped begging child and squalor against the glistening marble, gold and gems of the temples? This is the question that is posed to the viewer as I juxtapose black and white photographs of the temples and their icons, against the backdrop of bold saturated images of the people and their homes. The varied formats reveal the disconnect between the people and their prayers. • Gail Gelburd, 2012
